    Rain Gutter Cleaners
  • What are the pros and cons of rain gutters?

Question by Uncle Gonzo: What are the pros and cons of rain gutters?
I am taking of mine right now so I can repaint my house. It seems that some of the rotten fascia board I am seeing is due to water getting behind the gutters. I am considering only reinstalling the gutters over my patio, entryway, and garage door. I would like to have them there just to keep the pouring water off us as we enter the house. Just looking for some advise from someone who is not trying to sell me their product.
I have aluminum gutters now. What material would you recommend using. ie vinyl, copper, etc.

your gutters allow you to direct rainfall from the roof, away from your foundation, and prevents it from splashing up on the siding. without them, you could have water enter your basement, rot the siding, or worse the framing in the wall. your fascia board rot could also be caused by ice dams if you live in a northern climate, or clogged gutters. i’d suggest re installing your aluminum gutters, pitching them correctly to the downspouts, and investing in some good quality gutter screens. i’m not referring to those plastic mesh type, either. plastic gutters are junk, they fall apart all the time, and are prone to leaking, since they only come in 10′ lengths. as for copper, right now it’s at all time high prices, and thieves are stripping it out of, and off of houses in many areas of the country! a properly installed and working gutter system does more for your home than keep you from getting wet when you enter it. also, make sure the down spouts haven’t split their seams due to freezing before you put them back on the house. good luck, hope this helps.

Where is the rain gutter site?

Rain gutters are those metal things that look like half of a tube on the end of a roof and is formed to fit on one end with nails or braces, just before the overhang of the roof to catch water from rain. Every rain gutter has drainage enclosures called downspouts, that are made to draw water from roof and must be customized to fit for smooth and fast dispelling of rain storms. These downspouts must flow onto a splash board pit so not to erode ground. You may see flexible runs affixed to drainspouts to pull water further away from house. This protects foundation of house from water errosion.

It’s that season again. The rain gutters are already getting clogged with leaves. I don’t mind climbing ladders. I don’t even mind walking on the roof. Getting leaves out of gutters is actually easy.

But, we’ve had a persistent presence of bald-faced hornets and other stinging creatures. If there’s a nest in one of the gutters, and I were to disturb them (as I have in my younger years), it might be difficult to escape, whether from a ladder or from the roof.

Hmm. Maybe the leaves can wait until winter!

Can I use a trash can for a rain barrel?

    2

Question by Cowgirl B: Can I use a trash can for a rain barrel?
I was wondering if I could just let the rain collect in a trash can then take a bucket and just simply scoop the water out of the trash can or pour it out if it is low and light? When it gets hot and when there is no rain, could I just put the lid on to help prevent evaporation? I also heard that the water needs to be screened so not too much debris enters it. What could I use as a type of screen? Obviously, the trash can would be empty and clean before I use it… I’ll probably just buy a new one to make sure. I am not sure if I’ll have time to completely make a proper rain barrel. I might have time, but just to make sure I have means to collect rain water in some shape or form. Any other suggestions for an easy way to collect rain water or links to some sort of simple rain barrel? Let me know if this is a good or bad idea and why. Please help. Thanks!

Yes, what you are describing will work, but I wouldn’t be surprised if you got mosquitoes nesting in there. That’s another benefit of having a screen over the top.

When it rains hard, the rain comes streaming into our second floor bedroom through the wood framing.

Question by Sarah S: When it rains hard, the rain comes streaming into our second floor bedroom through the wood framing.
I’m not sure what else to call it, but the top of the inside wooden part of the window starts to HEAVILY drip water into the house when there is a bad rain storm. We can see that the water is streaming down the side of the house (along the windows.) We bought the house a year ago and the previous owner installed mesh gutter toppers, but we can see that the top piece of siding near the window is bowing out a bit. Should I call a roofer, gutter cleaner, or siding expert? HELP! We know that the water is damaging the wood and probably the interior of the walls.

If possible, you let the owner look for somebody to fix it.

Rent a steam cleaner and soak up the water. No need to add more water, just suck up the existing stuff. Next, put a fan near the wet spot and wait for it to dry.
