    Rain Gutter Cleaners
  • Can I use a trash can for a rain barrel?

    2

Question by Cowgirl B: Can I use a trash can for a rain barrel?
I was wondering if I could just let the rain collect in a trash can then take a bucket and just simply scoop the water out of the trash can or pour it out if it is low and light? When it gets hot and when there is no rain, could I just put the lid on to help prevent evaporation? I also heard that the water needs to be screened so not too much debris enters it. What could I use as a type of screen? Obviously, the trash can would be empty and clean before I use it… I’ll probably just buy a new one to make sure. I am not sure if I’ll have time to completely make a proper rain barrel. I might have time, but just to make sure I have means to collect rain water in some shape or form. Any other suggestions for an easy way to collect rain water or links to some sort of simple rain barrel? Let me know if this is a good or bad idea and why. Please help. Thanks!

Yes, what you are describing will work, but I wouldn’t be surprised if you got mosquitoes nesting in there. That’s another benefit of having a screen over the top.

When it rains hard, the rain comes streaming into our second floor bedroom through the wood framing.

Question by Sarah S: When it rains hard, the rain comes streaming into our second floor bedroom through the wood framing.
I’m not sure what else to call it, but the top of the inside wooden part of the window starts to HEAVILY drip water into the house when there is a bad rain storm. We can see that the water is streaming down the side of the house (along the windows.) We bought the house a year ago and the previous owner installed mesh gutter toppers, but we can see that the top piece of siding near the window is bowing out a bit. Should I call a roofer, gutter cleaner, or siding expert? HELP! We know that the water is damaging the wood and probably the interior of the walls.

If possible, you let the owner look for somebody to fix it.

Rent a steam cleaner and soak up the water. No need to add more water, just suck up the existing stuff. Next, put a fan near the wet spot and wait for it to dry.

Question by BESTMOM: Cheap way to conserve rain water?
I’ve looked all over the net trying to find an affordable way to store rain water throughout the year. With the drought in Texas this past year n the restriction on watering ur lawns, I want to start this project ASAP and be ready for summer 2012. Any ideas???

Rain barrels connected to your roof’s drain system. You may need a filter depending on the condition of your water. The last thing a man needs is a dead lawn.

Do you have rain gutters around the house that directs the rain away from the house? You might have to reseal your drive way.

How the heck did I get into Maintenance and Repairs. I’m out of here.
